Vegas Casino Ends Comps
Monday, February 7th, 2011If you’re not a high-roller, the Las Vegas Sands casino has no more freebies for you. The resort chain has ended comps for middle-tier gamblers at both of their Vegas Strip locations. Certain comps for top-tier players will remain, but the rest are gone.
The most common complimentary offering by casinos to middle-tier players is a free hotel room. Giving out free rooms encourages the players to stay there and gamble on the casino floor. However, the Las Vegas Sands has decided to end that comp so they can sell more rooms. The result, they hope, will be an increase in profits for the resort. But what if players stop gambling there and take their business elsewhere?
In addition to free hotel rooms, the Sands is eliminating all other comps for middle-tier players, something that so far has been unheard of. Chairman Sheldon Adelson says that means they have “cut out all of our accounts except the most highly rated players.” That means “there’s no more comp rooms given out. There’s no more food and beverage. There’s no shopping credits. There’s no restaurant credits. There’s no showroom credits.”
Meanwhile, the very top players, who spend so much money at the casino that they couldn’t possibly need more of it, well, they’ll still get comps. But for everyone else, you’re out of luck if you play at the Las Vegas Sands. That brings up an interesting question: Why would they play at the Las Vegas Sands?
I have some casinos that I’m partial to, but if they stop giving me comps and someone else is offering them, I’m going where the free stuff is. The games are the same anywhere, right? I know that the experience is different at each casino, but with all of the casinos on the Vegas Strip, I’m sure former Vegas Sands customers can find a good place to play that still offers middle-tier comps. It will be interesting to see how this strategy impacts the Sands’ revenue.
