No More Marvel Characters In Online Casinos?
Posted on: September 1st, 2009 8:13 am | By: Ricky BauerCan it be? Two Marvel articles in one day? That’s right true believers! Marvel is all over the news today with yesterday’s acquisition of Marvel Enterprises by The Walt Disney Company. As I was writing my last article about PartyCasino’s Marvel online slots promotion in September, I couldn’t help but wonder if this could be the last of the Marvel slots promos? With Disney taking over Marvel’s catalogue of characters, could their family friendly image lead to pulling Marvel characters out of online slots and any other online gambling games?
Bob Iger, President and CEO of the Walt Disney Company said of the deal: “This transaction combines Marvel’s strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor with Disney’s creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties, and a business structure that maximizes the value of creative properties across multiple platforms and territories,” he said. “Ike Perlmutter and his team have done an impressive job of nurturing these properties and have created significant value. We are pleased to bring this talent and these great assets to Disney.”
While Marvel’s CEO, Ike Perlmutter, had this to say: “Disney is the perfect home for Marvel’s fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses,” he said, “This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney’s tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world.”
The deal is too new for anyone of note to comment, but it would seem logical that Disney would not want to be associated with online gambling. From the points of view of many, however distorted those points of view may be, online gambling gets tossed in the same box with online pornography. Certainly if Marvel was licensing She-Hulk to some kind of comic book orgy fetish sites, Disney would remove the character promptly. Even though Marvel is a different brand, the Walt Disney Company still likes to keep its image relatively clean. So I wouldn’t be surprised if Mickey pulled the plug on Spider-Man’s online slot machine once and for all once the dust from this deal has settled.
