Poland Looks To Build Up Online Casino Industry

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Many high-ranking people familiar with the land-based casino industry in Poland have recently begun to be quite vocal about making the move towards licensing and regulation of online casinos. A board member of Casinos Poland, which has been around the block since 1988, voiced his support for taking the industry in this direction, saying it would help expand the opportunities of this eastern European nation.

Casino Poland is in possession of a hefty 55.28% of the domestic market share for the entire country. They operate seven top-of-the-line casinos that are scattered across the nation. These are built up alongside several slot machine venues through a subsidiary of Century Casinos.

People who are pushing for regulations say that they must exercise caution so that what they end up with does not resemble the system that Malta has in place. Although Malta has made online gambling legal in their country, the regulations they put in place are super intense and cumbersome. If another country in the region were to legalize the popular cyberspace activity, they would do exceedingly well in terms of attracting interest and potential investors with deep pockets.

Folks inside the industry are saying that Poland is the country that is in the best position to jump into the market so they need to act on it now. They would focus on establishing a strong relationship with the traditional casinos that are already in place so that they would be able to meet the needs of a rapidly growing industry.
Regulators and other industry insiders have expressed some concern about these prospected, indicating that a new and fresh legal framework is necessary before going ahead with any plans.

Opponents of Online Gambling Rejoice in UIGEA Rule

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

While most people in their right minds are greatly dismayed by the recent developments in regard to the rules put in place to regulate the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, some people are actually celebrating the outcome. Analysts have pointed out, however, that all the Treasury Department has succeeded in doing by moving forward with this measure is to further confuse the American people.

What exactly is and isn’t considered to be illegal gambling is still in question. The only thing accomplished through this final rule is to give financial institutions an out. With the new rules in place, banks are basically required to make their customers sign as a portion of their terms and conditions that they are not going to be engaged in an online gambling activity. And although this will do absolutely nothing in terms of putting an end to or even remotely curbing online gambling, many anti-gambling groups are rejoicing, considering this development to be a great victory.

A representative from Focus on the Family Action has called this victory a special victory for families after a decade-long battle that has finally come to completion. Well, sure, but they seem to be forgetting that it is still not illegal for people to gamble online. While many legislators believe that this is the ultimate answer in regard to helping and preserving American families but most people think that is entirely misguided.

If it were to be regulated, the online gambling industry would bring millions or perhaps even billions of dollars into the American economy at a time when it is in great need of revitalization. Think about it, people! That would certainly help American families.

Obama’s Promise of an Open and Uncensored Internet Bodes Well For the End of the UIGEA.

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Over the past 8 years of the Bush administration, in addition to the staggering effects from the war in Iraq and the sorry state of our national economy and the financial atmosphere worldwide, President-elect Barack Obama and the people he appoints to key positions within his cabinet will definitely have their work cut out for them. The damage caused by the misguided and sometimes insane choices of the Bush administration have left a huge mess in almost every sector of government. With the loss of freedom and basic rights through the passing of things like the Patriot Act, United States citizens are eager to see things get turned around in the White House.
To address all of the frightful developments that have occurred over the past eight years, Obama’s team is working on its agenda. One issue that will eventually get addressed is the UIGEA. With so much opposition to the UIGEA, coming not only from industry insiders but also from financial leaders and other officials from within the Treasury and the Federal Reserve, surely the necessary changes will ultimately be made after Obama takes office. Since its beginnings, the UIGEA has received much criticism for being vague, confusing and ultimately unenforceable. Additionally, it has been labeled as a potential danger to the American banking system.

Many proponents of the UIGEA are pushing to get the last-minute details in order so that the regulations can be published and put into place before the end of the Bush term. Obama has made it very clear that he wants the Internet to be open and accessible for everyone. And he wants it free from censorship. The inevitable way to go in that vein of thinking is to get the UIGEA rules repealed.
