This move comes in part as a result of criticism that Costa Rica recently received from an international policing group.

While the government of Costa Rica has already within the past year made a concerted effort to tighten up their industry of online casinos in terms of a strict adherence to standards and quality gambling, apparently those efforts were not enough. The Financial Action Task Force has indicated that the country needs to step up their game in terms of responding to this issue. In the works right now is a bill that aims at bringing about a substantial increase in government oversight.

Furthermore, it calls for increasing the tax amount by 2%. That bill that has been proposed is advancing through the legislature in Costa Rica right now. Who knows what the outcome will be, but the nation is doing everything in their power to make sure that their casino industry is maintained in control. The plan right now is for Costa Rica to apply the additional revenue raised by the added tax to offset slumped government revenue and the increases in costs related to operations.
