Indiana AT Pushes For State Control

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

While many major politicians have thrown their support behind the efforts of representatives Barney Frank and Jim McDermott in terms of regulating online casinos within the United States, some powerful politicians have also stepped out in opposition to their efforts. One of the latest major players in this regard is the Atty. Gen. for the State of Indiana. He announced to just a few short weeks ago that he opposes the federal bills that have been brought to Congress by these politicians.

The legislation they have brought forward aims to regulate and license and tax online casino sites as a way to generate extra revenue for the American economy. Considering the fact that we are suffering through a terrible economic recession that has seemed rather endless, this would be an inventive and much needed way to boost our financial situation and help us climb toward some sort of economic recovery.

What the Atty. Gen. for Indiana has indicated is that he wants individual states to have the power to regulate online casinos just like they do for a land-based casino gambling. He says it should not be determined at the federal level. He wants to uphold the autonomy of the state government and keep licensing and taxing of Internet casino gambling for the state government to control.

He has indicated that he considers the federal interference that could potentially come about if the legislation proposed by Frank and McDermott gets past would be unconstitutional. Either way, it may all be speculation at this point because the United States government has been dragging its feet on this issue for quite some time while many individual states such as New Jersey have made a great deal of progress.

Frank’s Bill Finally Heard

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Rep. Barney Frank has finally been able to have his bill heard by the House financial services committee. This hearing took place on April 16 and from this day forward, there could be major shifts in store for the future of the industry of online casinos in America. Although Barney Frank has been working toward making progress in this particular realm for quite some time, he the focus on his bill has been pushed to the back burner a number of times.

It is easy to understand why this has happened considering the fact that the United States has been battling with its healthcare programs, its ongoing wars in the nations of Afghanistan and Iraq and the horribly dreary economic recession that seems to have no end in sight. But now the time for Frank’s bill to be heard has come about at last.

This could mean some major shifts in the future from line casinos and many politicians and gambling operators throughout the world are taking note of what takes place once this event comes to pass. One of the main things that the bill aims to do is to tear down everything that the UIGEA has been trying to accomplish since it first was brought into effect.

Everyone who has a vested interest in this new bill has been fighting against the UIGEA for quite sometime since it is proven to be highly ineffective and all but impossible to fully execute. Casino gambling fanatics within America are super eager and excited about having their market opened up to them. For so long now it seems that so many doors have been shut to them in terms of Internet gambling and that could change very soon.

AGA Supports Casino Regulation

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

While it came as quite a surprise to many people within the industry of online casinos, the American Gaming Association recently made the announcement that it has decided to show its full support for the regulation of Internet gambling. The association represents all of the major United States casino operators. Harrah’s Entertainment and Wynn Resorts are a few of the powerhouse companies that belong to this particular group.

The association has indicated that with the advanced in technology that have taken place, there are the means in place to properly regulate online casino gambling so that the land based casino industry is protected out all times. The vast majority of the board has indicated that they hold a favorable opinion on Internet casino gambling. The only contention is that there must be incredibly secure regulatory control in place in order for everything to be effective.

At this point in time the American Gaming Association still has not come forward and endorsed any of the bills are pending in Congress right now that aim to regulate online casinos. One of these bills is Rep. Barney Frank’s comprehensive proposal that would aim to regulate and license Internet gambling sites.

Another bill up for contention is Rep. Jim McDermott’s measure that looks to fund the foster care programs through taxing Internet gambling site. With these innovative proposals on the line, it will be very interesting in the coming weeks and months see which way our government will shift in its gears and perspective on the potential earnings from online gambling.

UIGEA Laws Postponed Till June

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

With the recent decision to postpone the implementation of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, many operators of online casinos are once again hopeful that good things are sure to come in the near future. It has been quite an ongoing crisis trying to get some proper online casino regulation and laws in place within the United States. While the stringent rules for the UIGEA were supposed to go into effect recently, various institutions placed a lot of pressure on the powers that be to make sure that this law did not go into effect as previously planned.

The law is set up to place the burden on financial institutions and assorted banks to stop processing all transactions that are in any way shape or form related to activity at online casinos. Even though it seems rather unfair and almost impossible to lay this level of responsibility on these financial institutions, that is exactly what was planned through the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.

But since the United States Department of Treasury and the Federal Reserve Board made the announcement that the implementation of the UIGEA will not end up taking place and going into effect until the month of June on 2010, there is still some time to come up with some alternative solutions in the meanwhile. This is no easy task and many courageous people such as Representative Barney Frank have been working hard to come up with different ideas and solutions so that internet casino gambling can be a profitable and positive business in America. But we still have a mighty long way to go.

UIGEA Deadline Delayed 6 Months

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

With so many different things happening in the world of online casinos, it is hard to keep track of everything that is happening these days. But one thing is for sure, the online casino regulation effort within the United States is making substantial progress. One development that is evident of that notion is that the rules for enforcing the implementation of the terribly ineffective and misguided Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act have been pushed back by at least six full months. This comes as very welcome news for casino operators and players alike. Banking financial institutions are also quite pleased with this development since they were going to have to shoulder a huge portion of the responsibility to enforce these new requirements.

But still, the battle remains an uphill one for those who are leading the charge to get more legitimate access to online casinos for American players. If this delay had not taken place, it would have meant that all financial institutions across the nation of America would have had to stop processing transactions that are related in any way possible to online gambling.

The main problem is that this plan had no reasonable and sensible plan or strategy to make this enforcement possible and viable for those on who the blame would fall if things did not go according to plan. That is why Representative Barney Frank and a handful of others are working so hard to make sure that we have some rational legislation available for deciding how to control our nation’s collection of internet casinos. But there is still plenty of work that needs to be done.

Exec Summit Ponders US Casino Future

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

A lot of interesting ideas were explored in regard to the future of online casinos at the Gaming Executive Summit held in Madrid this past week. Everyone was eager to discuss what will happen with the pending online casino regulation in the United States. Everyone is curious to see how the whole debacle players out. Will Representative Barney Frank succeed in getting the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act repealed once and for all?

Will he be able to get all online casinos properly licensed within America? These are all at the forefront of everyone’s mind heading towards the fall season of gaming. One executive from 888 indicated that the he would wager money on the fact that the United States will maintain some level of the protectionist agenda they have in place right now and that they will end up restricting the internet casino licensed to only companies that have their base in the United States.

Others, however, are more hopefully that casinos within America will be exposed to a more liberal and logical set of guidelines and that there will be a great and substantial departure from the impossible and horrific UIGEA. Of course, all of this was just mere speculation, but the issues are looking to be resolved sometime early this fall so everyone is on the edge of their seats waiting and wondering what the final outcome will be. The U.S. has received quite a lot of criticism from individual countries and also from the European Commission in regard to their horrible policies that allegedly go against the trade agreements that have been set in place.

Frank Speaks In Vegas At WSOP

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Everyone who is even remotely invested in the future of online casinos within the United States listened quite intently recently as Representative Barney Frank spoke to poker players and other industry operatives at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. Frank indicated in his address that he is still thoroughly committed to pushing along with his efforts to get his proposed bill that will aim at regulating online casino gambling sites once and for all within America. Of course, Frank has faced considerable uphill challenges on his path along the way up to this point, and he acknowledges that the battle is far from over. For one thing, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act is still in existence.

Everyone out there who claims to be a true fan of online casinos in the United States should receive that fact as basically a big slap in the face. It is a slap in the face to anyone who thinks that they should be able to exercise their basic rights in terms of choosing to patron different casino gaming sites no matter where they may live. Frank was invited to participated in the festivities in Las Vegas for the World Series of Poker as a special guest of honor.

But he did mention that there have been a series of delays in terms of getting the bill all the way to the hearing stage because of the recession that is looming over the heads of politicians everywhere in America these days. It is a tricky situation and a bit of a difficult time to get issues that are not among the very top concerns (the economy, the wars, global warming, immigration, etc.) heard in a swift manner. That is just not in the cards right now. No pun intended.

Government Freezes Accounts

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

When the United States government went so far as to freeze the bank accounts of companies that process payments for players at online poker sites, that was going way to far. Citizens of the U.S. should have the right to play their favorite games at online casinos and poker sites without the threat looming over their heads that their government (the one that is supposed to be working for them, not against them, will confiscate any winnings they happen to accrue. This is absurd and very, very frightening. This interference is unacceptable and organizations such as the Poker Players Alliance are taking the government to task for this unbelievable abuse of power.

With seemingly everyone pushing for the repeal of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, including the European Union and online casino gambling advocates such as Representative Barney Frank, the government is not being seen in a very favorable light right now.

In one swift action, the government managed to undermine the basic rights of countless citizens. It seems that a U.S. attorney from New York has commanded no fewer than three separate banks to freeze these accounts and that means that many fans of online casinos and poker rooms who thought they had their winning funds coming to them were denied their money.

Yes, this is the exact same attorney’s office that has been making PartyGaming pay out that huge heap of settlement payments. And luckily for the casino and poker gamers out there, the Poker Players Alliance is not taking this situation lying down. They are fighting aggressively on behalf of all of the players in this situation so that the players are able to actually receive their winnings somehow, some way.

Court Date Set For IMEGA Case

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

It seems that the fate is closer to being sealed as far as the iMEGA legal battle against the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. The court date has officially been set with the United States Third Court of Appeals for the 7th of July. It will take place in Philadelphia.

The case will see Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association and their legion of attorneys going head to head with lawyers who will be representing the United States Department of Justice. Many people in the industry of online casinos were incredibly shocked with the outcome of the battle between the United States Department of Justice and PartyGaming so it will be very interesting to see how this ends up turning out.

The United States Department of Justice will be working hard to defend the merits of the UIGEA and the laws currently in place to protect American society against the evils of online casinos. The online casino gambling ban has been under fire from a wide variety of different activist groups and individuals as well as powerful bodies like the European Union. Everyone is pushing for the repeal of the UIGEA and some brand new comprehensive internet casino legislation and regulation.

In this particular trial, iMEGA will be arguing that the UIGEA should be disregarded because the language within the law as written is too vague to be a decisive and determining end-all be-all law that wields such a vast level of power over casino operators in America. There have been several hiccups and outright hassles associated with the UIGEA that will serve to aid iMEGA in building their case. Nonetheless, this case will bring about an interesting point of reference for the reform movement of casinos in America.

Anti-Casino Groups Advocate Lawlessness

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

It seems that even as the industry of online casinos within the United States continues to make progress and a series of very hopeful strides forward to getting properly regulated and licensed and legalized, there are countless forces fighting against the casino business.

In addition to forces such as Spencer Bachus, another group that has come out in opposition to the online casino operations in America is Concerned Women of America. Representatives of that particular organization have gone so far as to state that everything possible should be done to curb casino gambling across the nation since the effects are so incredibly terrible.

Many others who are involved in the anti-gambling movement have called upon the Department of Justice to bring about some sort of legislative smack-down on online casinos in America once and for all. The anti-gambling advocates are pursuing all possible angles to further their cause. It is not important to them if their means of achieving their goals fall on the wrong side of the law or not. They want internet casino gambling to be brought to a halt in America for once and for all.

These groups have even gone so far as to advocate for the government to seize winnings that normal, law-abiding citizens win. Their rationale is that it would be perfectly acceptable since gambling is essentially an activity that comes with an inherent risk of losing your money anyways. So really, they are in favor of lying, cheating and stripping innocent casino gamers of their constitutional rights as individuals just to further their cause. That is just unacceptable in my mind.
