Casino Owners Upset Over Obama Comment
Tuesday, February 24th, 2009While the recent remarks made by President Obama about company executives being wasteful with government money by booking trips to Las Vegas on tax payers’ dime have produced a certain amount of anger and frustration on the part of Las Vegas casino owners like Sheldon Adelson, it seems that the comment was a bit misunderstood. Nonetheless, it seems that Adelson and others are now worried that comments like this could adversely affect the economy of the city of Las Vegas and the entire state of Nevada.
As online casinos seem to be gliding with ease through these challenging financial times, many land-based casinos, especially along the strip in Sin City, have been hit hard by the lack of disposable income that many Americans are experiencing these days. That lack of extra income means fewer indulgent trips to places like Las Vegas. It makes more sense, it seems, to simply stay at home and play some games at online casinos. Las Vegas has traditionally been one of the top business convention locations in the entire United States and some of the casino resorts make the majority of their revenue by hosting such events.
In the comment of President Obama, he was not trying to imply that the conventions in Las Vegas be put to a stop, he was rather trying to warn company officials who have been playing the system for years that the stimulus money that they might be receiving would not be meant to cover expenses for their luxury trips inside or outside of the country. It was not meant to be any sort of dig directly against Las Vegas casinos.
