EU Has Own Internal Gambling Mess

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

While the European Union manages to sit in judgment of how poorly the United States is dealing with their laws for online casinos, they have gotten themselves into their on pickle. The EU has been delivering some hardline criticism on the U.S. online casino policies for denying any possibilities of accepting trade from foreign online casinos.

The EU goes on to claim that America is negatively targeting a handful of successful and highly competitive internet casino gambling sites that are based in Europe and that the U.S. government’s actions are technically in direct violation of World Trade Organization guidelines in terms of the reported commitment to free trade that has previously been agreed to.

But the European Union is currently battling with some intense problems of their own in regard to the governing and legal matters of online casinos. It appears that many of the allegedly unified markets are not allowing for fair competition for casino operators across the board either. Nonetheless, legislators from within the United States government have almost made a point of ignoring the criticisms and additional demands that have been sent their way from the European Union. The European Union, however, does itself no favor by having their own gambling market all out of whack.

The European Union should go ahead and back off a little bit from their attack on the legislation in place for online gambling in America until they are able to settle their own situation. Otherwise, their credibility as a governing body representative of a major region of the gambling world, goes right out the window. We in America are only able to stand hypocrisy when it is committed by our own elected officials - not by those of other nations.

EU Nations Examine Casino Regulations

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

The world of online casinos is approaching a new era of regulatory changes and there are many variables up in the air right now as far as what the future may hold for this particular industry. No fewer than 19 different European governments are in the midst of discussions regarding their online casino businesses. This figure was released from Gambling Compliance and this means that there will be a seemingly endless string of changes and legislative shifts as the industry gets geared up to adjust in a variety of ways. Many European Union member nations are simply choosing to follow down the same path as countries like Italy and the United Kingdom.

Many nations are opting to approach the situation in a decidedly proactive manner by pushing for some form of regulation for online casinos that are based in their country. The controversy then comes up when national governments get greedy over wanting to keep the casino gaming market in their own country to themselves to run a sort of subversive monopoly. Unfortunately, as members of the European Union, few other member nations are going to let that fly in any situation.

Everyone wants to get in on a good thing. Some nations have had more success than others in terms of limiting the presence of off-shore or foreign entities coming in and getting a piece of the casino market pie within their borders. And with the economy being in such a tender state, every bit of access or lack of access counts. Now the question still remains what role the United States will play in all of this, but hopefully the government will succeed in bringing about a positive alternative to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.

EU Seeks Repeal Of UIGEA

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Since the European Union has come out with its stance on what should happen for the future of online casinos within the United States, it seems that Representative Barney Frank is jumping to call attention to the increasingly international movement to get the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act repealed once and for all. There are many forces at work in this battle. The anti-casino gambling activists are extremely vocal and well-connected politically, but the support for the effort to get online casino sites regulated, legalized and taxed within the United States is growing momentum on a daily basis.

Of course, many people were given a great deal of hope when President Obama came into office since everyone is under the impression that his stance toward online casinos will be much more positive and transparent than the dodgy and constitution-bending style that the Bush Administration addressed this issue with. The European Union has stated that they are against the current policies that America has in place because they discriminate against casino sites that are owned by businesses outside of the United States.

This essentially serves to violate the global trade compacts that everyone relies on to keep the international business exchange fair and upright. The Bush Administration stepped all over the global trade rules with the UIGEA and the EU is calling on Obama to make it right. Of course, he has a lot of important issues on his plate right now so it will be interesting to see how long it takes for the current administration to address the casino gambling situation in America.

EU Demands Casino Reform From U.S.

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

The ban of online casinos within the United States has been receiving a great deal of criticism for the ineffective and illogical policies that are in place. Many of the naysayers are politicians and gaming activists within the United States but there are other international operators and organizations that have come out to speak against the horrible policies also. One such body is the European Union. The EU has started to try to throw its weight behind the online casino reform efforts in America that have been led extensively by Representative Barney Frank.

Since the United States has a considerable amount of interest in maintaining strong relations with the European Union in terms of keeping up a consistent feeling of goodwill and also in regard to maintaining strong trade relationships, it is in America’s best interest to heed the suggestions thrown out by the EU as far as online casinos are concerned.

The EU has come out with some urgent suggestions that the United States needs to end its efforts to place some sort of lockdown prohibition on the online casino gambling market in America because keeping it going is in direct violation of international trade agreements that every country invested in the relationship between America and the EU are intensely concerned about.

The United States Justice Department and the Bush Administration have seemingly done everything they can to block internet casino gambling within the United States. For the most part those efforts have been largely terrible and ineffective. Still just their mere existence is not good for EU-American relations and that needs to be addressed.

EU Pressures Finland To Change Gambling Laws

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

It seems that it may be just a matter of time before the nation of Finland gives in to the pressure it has been receiving from the member countries of the European Union in regard to operating what is essential a monopoly for the business devoted to online casinos within its country. Only one company, Veikkas, is able to take advantage of the thriving industry within the confines of the country and the members of the European Union are claiming that this system that Finland has set up for its online casinos is in direct violation of the union agreements.

The main developments that have occurred so far in terms of the European Union pressing Finland to take action in regard to their casino policies is that they have given the nation of Finland a two-month period during which time the country is expected to work and make the necessary changes it must in order to be found in compliance with European Union regulations. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. Finland has not been known to be highly cooperative when faced with this kind of pressure.

But so far Finland has not yet had its feathers rumpled by any of the outcries. They have gone so far as to harshly penalize any outsider online gambling companies that attempt to conduct their casino business within the confines of the nation of Finland. It is still a bit too early to determine which way this online casino situation will go but the European Union wields a considerable amount of power and few individual nations are able to endure pressure for very long.
