Stimulus Package Excludes Casinos
Posted on: January 29th, 2009 4:47 am | By: helenIt seems as though casinos were left out in the cold as far as being able to receive some love from the $825 bilion stimulus package that is working its way through the government. The new administration under President Barack Obama seems to be sending the message that no one in Congress is going to be able to get their issues brought to the forefront of the equation. While the message was not written in big bold sharpie letters, it came through loud and clear. Casinos, including online casinos and poker rooms, were left out of the list of recipients of specially targeted state funds.
One congressman was quite disappointed with this development. Harry Reid, a Senate Majority Leader who represents Nevada, sees the casino industry as a huge player in the health of his state’s economy. With the national financial situation as gloomy as it has been, many online casinos and land-based casinos have taken quite a hit in business. Casinos in the state of Nevada are huge providers of jobs. Giving a boost to the casino industry would be helping create new jobs for many people who live in Nevada and find themselves under or unemployed.
None of the spending in the bill for the stimulus package has been earmarked to go towards casinos. But, misery loves company. Casinos were not the only ones left out in the cold. Some other groups excluded from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act include aquatic centers, zoo renovations, skateboard parks, horse paths and museum renovations.
