If you are a problem gambler residing in the United Kingdom, trust me – you are not alone. In an article that appeared recently in The Daily Mail, it appears that gamblers within the country have racked up enormous debts - more than seven billion dollars – from their online gambling pursuits. The exact figures are staggering. About 284,000 problem gamblers who live I the United Kingdom now owe a grand total of $7.08 billion. That, on average works out to be just a little bit more than $25 for each individual. And this news comes with criticism directed at the administration of Prime Minister Gordon Brown that has done nothing to stop this from happening.

The troubling data is the result of a special betting industry data analysis that the Conservatives pushed for.  Doctors, politicians and charities have warned of the dangerous surge in gambling addiction and the accompanying debt. The tragic results from these developments are serious, involving such troubling issues as poor health, higher incidents of crime and the breakdown of the family. The government o the United Kingdom has been harshly criticized for their blatant lack of leadership in responding in a swift and efficient manner to this issue.

With the nation and many other parts of the world sinking deeper and deeper into an economic downward spiral, these are not the times to ignore the vulnerabilities that are created and tend to fester during such times. People are drowning in enormous gambling debts. The government needs to take action soon to resolve the issue and prevent it from getting any worse.
